FBI Director Chris Wray said Thursday he has not detected "any whiff of interference" by White House officials — or anyone else — in the federal investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election.
In his first public comments since becoming chief at the bureau, Wray also said he had confidence in Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his office to "do the job" of investigating any Russian involvement in the 2016 election, The Wall Street Journal reported.
"I can say very confidently that I have not detected any whiff of interference with that investigation," Wray declared at an Intelligence and National Security Summit in Washington, the New York Post reported.
And answering concerns about Mueller and his investigations team's impartiality, Wray was equally confident, the Post reported.
"I have enormous respect for former Director Mueller, who I got to work with almost daily in the early 2000s, as a consummate professional," Wray said at the Summit, the Post reported. "He's really running that investigation."
Wray told the gathering he also was heartened the strides the FBI had made since he left government in 2005, though he added one challenge is the progress by America's adversaries "in technology, in my humble view, is exceeding our ability to keep up with it."
"We are going to have to buckle down and work collaboratively in a way we are not quite yet," Wray said, the Journal reported, noting federal agencies have long been urged tp work more closely with each other and with private companies on various technological and intelligence issues.
