The infamous photo of Chris Christie relaxing on a state beach last summer has made an embarrassing comeback — and the outgoing New Jersey governor isn't laughing.
The Garden State Republican is bristling that Democratic governor-elect Phil Murphy cheekily posed with a life-sized cardboard cutout of the photo, showing Christie, in a pair of swimming trunks, lounging with his family at Island Beach State Park on the Fourth of July.
That photo had New Jersey residents in a lather because a government shutdown had closed all state beaches — although Christie was exempt because the stretch of sand he was on was part of a residence reserved for governors.
"I think someone's got to remind him that the campaign is over. It's disappointing because we've been so open and so welcoming to him, and not playing politics at all," Christie fumed, according to NorthJersey.com.
"I just think it sends a really terrible message to people about, if you say you want to bring people together and do all the rest of that, then what you should want to do is focus on the future and not be looking at the past."
Murphy said he got the idea to pose with the Christie cutout when he spotted it at a gala held by the New Jersey Working Families Alliance.
"It was right in front of me! I was standing near the cutout. I couldn't resist," Murphy laughingly told NJ Advance Media.
