China has ramped up its aggressive shows of force in the heavily disputed South China Sea, recently deploying a sonic weapon that has experts concerned President Xi Jinping is working to orchestrate a "crisis for Christmas."

On Saturday, China's maritime patrol ships reportedly deployed an unspecified "acoustic device" that purportedly caused "severe temporary discomfort" to Philippine crew members who were aboard government vessels attempting a supply mission.
