Forty-four people were shot, including five who died, during a 14-hour time span Sunday in Chicago, CNN reports.

"The city of Chicago experienced a violent night," said Bureau of Patrol Chief Fred Waller. "Some of these instances were targeted and were related to gang conflicts in those areas."

The number was even greater over the weekend, as 60 people had been shot, nine fatally, since Friday at 5 p.m. Thirty-four of those shootings occurred between 10 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, according to police, and included five fatalities.

In some of the incidents, gunmen had shot into large crowds in a few of the districts.

One paramedic described Saturday evening as a "war zone," per ABC News.

During one 2.5-hour early morning period alone on Sunday, 25 people were shot, including two fatally, according to the Chicago Tribune. One of the victims was a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the face.

Chicago police in May said gun violence continued to fall, listing only 146 homicides up to that point or 42 fewer than the same period last year. The number of shooting victims had also fallen from 1,014 to 710.

Waller on Sunday told CNN shootings are down 30 percent from 2017, and murders are down 25 percent.
