Chelsea Manning Claims She's Banned From Canada

Chelsea Manning, the former Army soldier who was convicted of leaking several hundred thousand government documents to the media, claimed Monday that Canada will not allow her to enter its country.

Manning, who served under her birth name Bradley Manning, has transitioned into a female identity in recent years and had her 35-year sentence commuted by former President Barack Obama in January. She posted an image of a document on her Twitter account Monday that purportedly showed that she is essentially banned from entering Canada:

The document explains that Manning tried to enter Canada from New York into Quebec but was denied because of her conviction on espionage and other charges — which it compared to treason.

"If committed in Canada this offense would equate to an indictable offense, namely treason," the document read.

Manning spoke at an event in Nantucket more than a week ago and said her actions, in which she leaked close to 750,000 classified and sensitive documents, did not mean she is a traitor.

"I believe I did the best I could in my circumstances to make an ethical decision," she said.

Manning was released from prison in May.
