Charles Krauthammer: Obama, IRS 'Playing Games' With Congress

By    |   Tuesday, 24 June 2014 10:26 AM EDT

The Internal Revenue Service and the administration of President Barack Obama are "playing games" with Congress' investigation into the agency's targeting of conservative groups seeking nonprofit status, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer said on Fox News.

The delays in providing information to Congress and recent revelations about lost emails by former IRS official Lois Lerner and six other employees amounted to stonewalling and an attempt to "slow walk" the process, Krauthammer said.

Additionally, the answers by IRS Commissioner John Koskinen in hearings on Capitol Hill, where he said he did not tell Congress about the lost emails because members didn't ask, displayed a "smugness" and "arrogance," Krauthammer said.

It's "as if this is some kind of game where a committee has to imagine every possible 10,000 stonewalling scenarios and ask a question about every one of them," Krauthammer told "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday. "This is a major issue. And, it's clear that the IRS and the administration are playing games in order to stonewall, slow walk, and conceal the evidence."

Krauthammer called Koskinen a "party hack" who was "doing a great political service to his party" in the manner he presented the issue to Congress.

"The IRS ought to be above party and above partisanship. Clearly, it wasn't in the actions it took against the tea party. And now it continues to be partisan and party like, and not acting as a instrument of national welfare because of the way it is stonewalling these investigations," Krauthammer said.

Without Lerner's emails, Krauthammer said the only way Congress might get the needed information might be through a special prosecutor. But, he admitted, "With this president and this attorney general, you'll never see it."
