Former NBA star Charles Barkley called Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore a "white separatist" on Saturday, The Hill reports.
"I mean Roy Moore is running with Steve Bannon as his right-hand man, who is a white separatist. I'm not even going to get into the women stuff, but how can you be a white separatist and represent all the constituents in your state?" Barkley told reporters ahead of the Auburn-Alabama football rivalry game.
Moore's campaign has been rocked by allegations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls decades in the past. He has denied the claims, but many lawmakers have called on him to step away from the race.
Barkley, the only person to publicly call Moore a white separatist, says the sexual assault claims shouldn't be the only thing people focus on.
"Everybody is going crazy over these sexual allegations, but Roy Moore, to me, when he brought in Steve Bannon, should have been disqualified ... How can you have a guy who is running with a white separatist running for a political office? We have a lot of black people in this state who are amazing people. But to run a campaign with a guy as your chief advocate who is a white nationalist, a white separatist, that should have disqualified Roy Moore way before this women stuff came up," he said.
Bannon, a former top adviser to President Donald Trump who has returned as head of Breitbart.com, has denied claims he is a white separatist, saying he does not define "alt-right" as white nationalist.
Barkley, who was a star basketball player at Auburn University, has flirted with running for Alabama governor in the past.
