Carnival Triumph Breaks Loose From Dock in Heavy Wind

Wednesday, 03 April 2013 05:18 PM EDT

Carnival Corp., the cruise operator beset by mishaps at sea this year, said its Triumph cruise ship broke loose from a dock under heavy winds in Mobile, Ala., where it’s being repaired.

The ship broke from its moorings and is resting against a cargo vessel, the company said today in an e-mailed statement. Tugboats and the U.S. Coast Guard are on site.

The Triumph was under repair after a fire and engine failure in February left 3,100 passengers adrift of the Mexican coast without electricity and working toilets. The ship was scheduled to return to service June 3.

Vance Gulliksen, a spokesman for the company, said he was checking into local news reports that there were workers overboard as result of today’s incident.

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching the water after receiving a report that a worker had fallen overboard, Lt. Torry James, a spokesman in Mobile, said in an interview. The worker is an employee from BAE Systems Plc, which is repairing the ship, James said.

The company last month had to fly passengers back to the U.S. from St. Maarten after its Dream ship had a malfunction in its emergency generator. Last year more than two dozen passengers on Carnival’s Costa Concordia lost their lives after the ship hit a rock off the Italian coast.

Carnival, the world’s largest cruise operator, fell 1.7 percent to $33.63 at the close in New York, the most in two weeks.
