California has the worst quality of life among all U.S. states, according to a new report that looked at natural and society environments.
The report published in U.S. News and World Report evaluated factors such as urban air quality, pollution, voter participation, community engagement, and social support. More than 30,000 people were surveyed to obtain the results, which were compiled by consulting firm McKinsey & Company.
California has several of the most traffic-congested urban areas in the country, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as sky-high housing costs and a recent surge in homelessness. While the economy is doing well at the current time, experts predict the recent uptick will not last because of high taxation rates and onerous regulations on businesses.
The other states at the bottom of the quality of life list include Texas, Illlinois, Indiana, and New Jersey. Top-ranked states were North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and South Dakota.
Other factors by which states were ranked included health care, education, economy, opportunity, infrastructure, crime and corrections, and fiscal stability. California did get higher marks for health care (11th) and the economy (4th).
As of July 2017, the state of California alone was ranked as the sixth largest economy in the world, but also has some of the worst poverty in the country.
While some Twitter commenters said they like living in California, many others agreed with the findings.
