Pat Buchanan: Obama Immigration Moves Will Set US 'Completely on Fire'

By    |   Saturday, 23 August 2014 08:38 PM EDT

Former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan predicted that any executive action President Barack Obama takes on illegal immigration will "set the country completely on fire."

"It might get out the Hispanic vote," Buchanan said in response to a comment by Susan Ferrechio of The Washington Examiner in a segment of "The McLaughin Report" that aired Friday on PBS.

Story continues below video.

"But you will have red state Democrats denouncing the president for doing it, for engaging in unconstitutional action," he said. "It would be a tremendous firestorm, which would really polarize the nation."

Obama is expected to take several executive steps to address illegal immigration in light of the crisis created by the more than 63,000 minors who have been arrested at the U.S. border since Oct. 1. More than 90,000 are expected to be apprehended by the end of next month.

Obama has dubbed the situation "a humanitarian crisis," but Republicans have charged that the administration's lax enforcement of immigration laws triggered the deluge.

They also point to reports in Central American media that spotlight U.S. policies that defer deportation of minors.

The president is expected to announce his actions after Labor Day.

However, Buchanan, who ran for the White House three times, predicted at the end of the show: "Barack Obama will do some kind of amnesty for the illegal aliens by Labor Day."
