The resignation of CBS investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson shows the network has no interest in allowing its reporters to report, says Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center.
Appearing Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "
Your World with Neil Cavuto," Bozell said there is "a stunning similarity" between Attkisson's case and that of former CBS correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who resigned after publicly sparring with the network over what he termed liberal bias.
"When Bernie Goldberg wrote a piece in The Wall Street Journal telling his network that they had to stop it with these attacks on conservative economic policies … he was banished for all intents and purposes from CBS until he finally resigned," Bozell said.
Attkisson broke stories on Benghazi, he said, "and she basically hasn't been heard from ever since."
Attkisson herself cited
liberal bias and not getting her reports on the air in a interview Monday with Politico.
Cavuto suggested that part of the problem might be that the media finds it easier to report stories that don't require much thought.
Bozell agreed, but reminded Cavuto of the old newsroom adage, "If it bleeds, it leads."
"This is a story that bled, and it bled profusely," Bozell said, adding that he was stunned by the lack of follow-up to Attkisson's Benghazi stories.
When Attkisson broke a story that the Benghazi attack wasn't, as the Obama administration had initially insisted, reaction to an anti-Muslim video, CBS never followed up, he said.
"After she reported it in 2012 for four months they didn't let her do another story," he said. "When that aired, it was another five months before she reported her next story. That's a network that's not allowing its reporters to report the news."
He contrasted the lack of Benghazi coverage to extensive reporting on New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's Bridge-gate controversy.
"And yet Benghazi, which is more important by a factor of 100,000, isn't covered at all. And no one's interested in investigating it," he said. "Now, what's the difference? One is a Republican, the other one's a Democrat."
