Bossie Claims Court 'Victory' for Americans

By    |   Wednesday, 03 February 2010 09:24 PM EST

The recent Supreme Court decision overturning some limits on campaign spending represents a major victory for the First Amendment, says Citizens United President David Bossie.

Citizens United, which had been barred from advertising a documentary about Hillary Clinton, was the victor in the case, decided last month.

“This is a major victory for all Americans who believe in free speech,” Bossie told Newsmax.TV’s Ashley Martella.

“We took on this task, … because we felt strongly that we must stand up for free speech. We felt we must stop our slide down the slippery slope of criminalizing political speech, which is what Congress did.”

And who gains most from the Supreme Court decision? “Your average American who has an interest in participating in the political process can now do so without fear,” Bossie said.

Unions always have been able to participate in the political process, he says. “Who hasn’t been able to fully participate are other interest groups like Citizens United, the NRA [National Rifle Association] and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.”

No one aside from the left wing and media is bothered by the ruling, Bossie says. “Only The New York Times is upset about the average person getting the same rights that they do. … It’s really leveled the playing field for the conservative movement.”

Bossie blasts President Obama for expressing opposition to the decision during his State of the Union address with the Supreme Court justices sitting in front of him. This is the first time in American history that has happened.

“I find it troubling and somewhat a use of intimidation by the president to do that,” Bossie said. The Supreme Court does what it thinks is best to uphold the constitution.

“It’s a little hard to get your mind around what he did. But it gave even more credibility to what we’re trying to do,” Bossie said. “It shows them for who they are. He was fundamentally wrong in what he said.”
