President Donald Trump said in a tweet Thursday that congressional leadership assured him he would have funds by the end of the year to build the border wall when he reluctantly signed the omnibus budget bill in March, raising questions about whether he will sign a short-term funding bill to prevent a government shutdown.
The Senate has approved a bill to
keep the government funded through Feb. 8 and avoid a shutdown. It now faces a House vote.
Trump wrote on Twitter:
"When I begrudgingly signed the Omnibus Bill, I was promised the Wall and Border Security by leadership. Would be done by end of year (NOW). It didn’t happen! We foolishly fight for Border Security for other countries - but not for our beloved U.S.A. Not good!"
Trump's post came as the White House separately said he is not onboard with the critical spending agreement because it lacks the border wall funding he wants.
"At this moment, the president does not want to go further without border security, which includes steel slats or a wall. The president is continuing to weigh his options,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement announcing a meeting between Trump and GOP lawmakers later Thursday.
