Boehner: Obama’s not Doing Enough to Halt Iran’s Military

By    |   Friday, 13 July 2012 01:04 PM EDT

House Speaker John Boehner has blasted President Barack Obama for failing to check Iran’s increasing military activity.

Boehner’s comments were sparked by a Pentagon report released June 29 that outlined Iran’s efforts to enhance its conventional, unconventional, and nuclear weapons capabilities, Fox News reports.

“The threat from Iran is real,” Boehner told reporters on Capitol Hill Thursday. “It's real for our closest ally, Israel, and it's real for all of the countries in the region.”

Boehner said Obama has neglected to fully utilize all the sanctions imposed on Iran by Congress. “We gave the president a full toolbox of tools to use, sanctions to use, to help bring the Iranians to heel,” the speaker said. “The president ought to use more of the tools that were given to him to get Iran to declare that they're not going to produce nuclear weapons.”

Iran actually has declared repeatedly that it has no plans to produce nuclear weapons. But International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors have concluded that Iran’s nuclear activity indeed includes a “military dimension,” indicating the rogue regime is trying to develop nuclear weapons.

The international community has implemented a decade’s worth of sanctions on Iran to make it stop its weapons development. But the government’s activity continues.

The Pentagon’s June report said that “Iran’s principles of military strategy remain deterrence, asymmetrical retaliation, and attrition warfare.”

On Friday, Iranian media reports claimed that war games this month included missiles with improved accuracy and firing capabilities, The Associated Press reports.
