Bill Oakley, the former writer and showrunner for "The Simpsons," is calling out Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for using a screen grab from the series to mock House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Pompeo posted an image of a weeping Lisa Simpson tearing up pieces of paper Tuesday night, a swipe at Pelosi ripping up a copy of President Donald Trump's State of the Union address.
Oakley tweeted:
"Mr. Secretary of State please do not ever ever ever use Simpsons material in your twitter or watch the show or refer to it in any way."
He added:
"(To be clear this episode aired before [Josh Weinstein, Oakley's writing partner and former co-showrunner] and I even worked on the show and was written by the genius George Meyer and I say this to Mr. Pomepo as a FAN of this episode, not someone who worked on it. If he starts using Steamed Hams, then this will become personal.)"
The image of Lisa sobbing and tearing pieces of paper comes from the 1991 episode, "Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington," in which Lisa enters an essay-writing contest about America and wins a trip to Washington.
There, she witnesses a congressman accepting a bribe and disheartened, changes her final essay to scold the government.
Oakley and Weinstein were writers on "The Simpsons" from its third season, before eventually becoming showrunners for Seasons 7 and 8 — and together wrote the famous "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" two-part episode, Newsweek noted.
