Joe Biden's presidential campaign downplayed the importance of any victory in Iowa as he fights for the Democratic presidential nomination, Politico reported.
"Do I think we have to win Iowa? No," a senior adviser said Tuesday during a briefing.
But the adviser acknowledged that Iowa, which holds the first nominating contest, will be "critical."
"We think we're going to win," the adviser said. "We think it's going to be a dogfight. … But we think there are several candidates in this field, there's probably three or four, that are going to go awhile."
Biden's adviser then mentioned Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Kamala Harris of California, and Cory Booker of New Jersey, along with South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Another Biden adviser said the campaign is "now ramping up for Super Tuesday and beyond."
"We feel we are going to be in a very dominant spot" after the first four early states, the adviser told Politico.
Vanity Fair noted Biden did not come close to winning Iowa in a previous bid for president.
