Just two months ago, pundits were openly wondering whether conservative wunderkind Sen. Ted Cruz was headed for a Lone Star beatdown.

A Quinnipiac poll in mid-April showed the incumbent GOP senator statistically deadlocked with fast-rising Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke, a three-time House member from El Paso. Although Cruz led 47 to 44 percent, his edge was well within the poll’s margin on error. The race, therefore, was a statistical dead heat.
