Like President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces what he has denounced as a media-led witch hunt – with an announcement of anti-corruption allegations coming just five weeks before an April 9 election, as CNN reports.

With six million registered voters in Israel and an election projected to potentially come down to a few thousand votes, every bit of news can shape the electorate.

The election will come before any indictment, too, now that Netanyahu's lawyers have time to review evidence before a hearing to determine if the attorney general will file charges, leaving "the next major legal headline may be months away," per CNN.

Netanyahu, who would become Israel's longest-standing prime minister this July if re-elected, is behind in the polls for the first time and has been further damaged by the attorney general's untimely announcement of a potential indictment, a product of a left-wing attack on him because they had been unable to beat him at the ballot box, he claimed in a primetime address Thursday, as CNN reported.

Former Israeli military chief of staff Benny Gantz, having merged with a centrist party, is ahead in the polls before any charges are finalized against the media skewered of Netanyahu .

Netanyahu's pitch is fighting the establishment media attacks on him and polarizing his right wing base, much like President Trump.

Coincidentally, President Trump and his administration's Middle East peace plan looms large. It stands to be rejected by Netanyahu's right-wing base – "a clear and immediate danger," per right-wing leader Naftali Bennett, CNN reported.

"And this has left Netanyahu in an uncomfortable position: If he accepts the plan, he loses his coalition; if he rejects the plan, he loses Trump," CNN wrote.
