Bachmann, Wasserman Schultz Squabble on CNN Over Benghazi

Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Democratic National Committee chairwoman, accused Republicans of latching onto the 2012 Benghazi attack because their efforts to undermine the Affordable Care Act had fallen flat.

She leveled the charge during a contentious Sunday appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" with Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann.

The congresswomen jousted as host Candy Crowley tried to conduct a joint interview.

Bachmann repeatedly interrupted Wasserman Schultz, including when she asserted that Republicans had lost their fervor for repealing Obamacare.

"You know, Candy, that is not true at all," Bachmann said.

Wasserman Schultz replied, "Excuse me. Michele, I didn't interrupt you, so I would appreciate it if you didn't interrupt me."

The Florida Democrat said that while the Republican majority in the House had the power to create the Benghazi select committee, the process was not credible, and the outcome has been predetermined.

The Minnesota conservative broke in to say, "That's absolutely not true," insisting that their CNN appearance needed to be "a dialogue and not a monologue." Bachmann charged that Democrats had "tried to sabotage" the probe into Benghazi "from the very beginning."

She said that Americans wanted to know where the "false narrative" that blamed the incident on "a video rather than the terrorist actions of Ansar al-Sharia" came from. "I think what this committee is doing is taking a very careful look at a very deliberate pace to go through depositions."

Wasserman Schultz countered that Democrats "don't have the ability to sabotage" the committee's work. "We don't have even the ability to be assured that we're able to participate in the interviews of the witnesses. We don't have consultation power on the subpoenas."

Crowley said that a CNN poll showed many more Americans were interested in jobs, healthcare, and the federal budget deficit than the issues of security and terrorism.

Bachmann replied that the survey didn't change the fact that answers were needed to explain "what happened on that fateful night with four Americans who lost their lives."
