Baton Rouge police have arrested three people in what Chief Carl Dabadie described as a "credible threat" against local officers after a local pawn shop was robbed of eight handguns over the weekend.

One suspect caught inside the Cash America Pawnshop, 3300 block Government St., told police that the guns were stolen "to get bullets to harm police officers," Dabadie told a news conference, The Baton Rouge Advocate reports.

One other suspect remains at large, Dabadie said. None have been identified.

Dabadie said the suspect's comment represented a "credible threat" against local police. An officer interrupted them during the burglary, according to the Advocate.

Eight handguns were stolen from the pawnshop, according to news reports. No ammunition had been taken.

The man caught by police was carrying a handgun and a BB gun. Four more guns have been recovered.

The burglary came days after Alton Sterling, 37, was killed by police officers and followed the killing of five Dallas police officers in a sniper ambush in retaliation for recent police-involved slayings of African-American men.
