Sen. John Barrasso said Monday Democrats are prepared to take the nation over the fiscal cliff like the characters from the movie "Thelma & Louise," if Republicans refuse to accept new tax increases as part of a plan to reduce the deficit and head off automatic spending cuts.
"Thelma & Louise, over the cliff, put the country back into another recession," the Wyoming Republican told Fox News' Neil Cavuto. "Why do they want to do that? They want to threaten America to say you will have to raise taxes."
"What we need to do is elect Mitt Romney and then for the next year, while we are working on tax reform, say do not raise taxes on anyone, provide some certainty so then people get hired," Barrasso continued. "And that is the best way to do it."
"There is no way legitimately that you can do overall tax reform between now and Christmas Eve," Barrasso added, echoing what many Republicans have been saying for months — that delaying the year-end deadline for a budget deal by a year would give Romney time to work out his own budget plan and get Democrats on board.
