Former President Barack Obama sent out a congratulatory tweet on Wednesday morning following widespread Democratic victories in Tuesday's elections.
Particularly important was the gubernatorial race in swing state Virginia, where Democrat Ralph Northam defeated Republican Ed Gillespie with a larger-than-expected margin.
The election was widely seen as a litmus test for President Donald Trump's ability to help Republicans win statewide office, as he backed Gillespie in the race, the Daily Caller reported.
Democrats also won a victory in New Jersey, as Philip Murphy beat Republican Kim Guadagno in the race to replace GOP Gov. Chris Christie.
Last month, Obama went on the campaign trail in both Virginia and New Jersey to support the Democratic candidates, Newsweek reported.
"Our democracy is at stake," Obama told Virginians while stumping for Northam, urging voters to reject what he called Trump's "politics of fear."
"Elections matter. Voting matters. You can't take anything for granted. You can't sit this one out. It's up to you."
Many blamed indifferent Democratic voters in last year's presidential election for not going to the polls in large enough number in several key states, which helped lead to Trump's surprise victory.
