Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, R-N.Y., blasted President Joe Biden’s border efforts this week, calling the administration’s meetings with Mexican government officials “too little, too late.”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas traveled to Mexico City on Wednesday to discuss migration policy at the border between the two countries.
The visit to Mexico follows a phone call between Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador last week, in which the two leaders reportedly discussed migration levels.
“I don’t expect anything to come out of it. We have people on the other side of the aisle who are claiming this is the administration stepping up and looking to do something,” D’Esposito said of the administration’s meeting during an interview on “The Hill on NewsNation.”
“Have they kept their head in the sand for that long that they haven’t realized that this has become an issue plaguing our entire country?” he continued. “Every state is now a border state, every city a border city.”
Republicans have frequently criticized the White House on immigration, describing it as a crisis and crucial to next November’s election. Some Democrats are also calling on the federal government to act, as red state governors send thousands of migrants to blue cities throughout the country, in many cases straining their social services to breaking point.
In recent months, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, both Democrats, have fought for federal aid as tens of thousands of migrants have overwhelmed the Big Apple.
As Senate Republicans continue to wrangle with the Biden administration over a broad border security deal, D’Esposito wouldn’t say if House Republicans would support any border agreement.
“I think we have to see,” he said. “We have to see what the deal is, what they want to put on the table.”
The New York Republican told The Hill that his border security and immigration policies ae centered on resources.
“I want to see more Customs and Border Patrol agents hired,” he said. “I want to see investments in the ability to process asylum. I am not one of those people who say that we should not welcome people into this country. I believe people are deserving of the American dream, but they need to come through the front door.”
