The world’s greatest chefs, movie stars, politicians and writers told of their shock and sorrow on Friday at the news that Anthony Bourdain had committed suicide while on a shoot for his CNN show "Parts Unknown" in France.
From around the world, they took to Twitter to express their horror at the sudden death of one of TV’s most recognized personalities.
And, with Bourdain’s death coming just days after designer Kate Spade taking her own life, many urged that anybody with suicidal thoughts should reach out for help immediately.
"Stunned and saddened by the loss of Anthony Bourdain," British chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsey wrote on Twitter.
Actor Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White on AMC’s "Breaking Bad," said: "There are nearly 45,000 suicides every year in the US. Shocking. I was saddened to hear of the deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. RIP. It illustrates that success is not immune to depression. We all need to be more aware of our friends who are suffering."
Pop star and actress Mandy Moore, tweeted: "This is utterly heartbreaking. Thank you for opening our eyes to parts of the world both cherished and unknown. What a legacy. Sending peace and love to his family. If you or someone you love needs help, please reach out or call 1-800-273-TALK."
Scientist and author Neil deGrasse Tyson called Bourdain "A friend of Food & Culture. A friend to us all."
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tweeted: "Anthony Bourdain's suicide a sobering reminder of how fragile life is and that we never know what's going on inside of another. Suicide is rarely a person acting, but rather being acted upon by the disease of clinical depression. We are all vulnerable. So very sad."
Terry McMillan, best-selling author of "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," said on Twitter "I really loved watching and listening to Anthony Bourdain. He was smart and sexy and I envied him being able to travel the world to eat. I wish people who are struggling inside could bring themselves to tell someone they are full of anguish or pain. Hope is reachable."
CNN anchor Jake Tapper, a colleague of Bourdain’s at the cable news network, tweeted:
"This is so awful. Anthony Bourdain, 61, has died. He took his own life. He was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series. His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning."
Elijah Wood, star of the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" movies, said: "His wisdom, his insight, his humor, his compassion, his staunch resistance to the inauthentic and support of all that resonates from the heart, and his passion for life that he shared with the us....Its difficult to process a world without Anthony Bourdain."
