Stunned Chefs, Stars, Politicians Mourn Anthony Bourdain

The world’s greatest chefs, movie stars, politicians and writers told of their shock and sorrow on Friday at the news that Anthony Bourdain had committed suicide while on a shoot for his CNN show "Parts Unknown" in France.

From around the world, they took to Twitter to express their horror at the sudden death of one of TV’s most recognized personalities.

And, with Bourdain’s death coming just days after designer Kate Spade taking her own life, many urged that anybody with suicidal thoughts should reach out for help immediately.

"Stunned and saddened by the loss of Anthony Bourdain," British chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsey wrote on Twitter.

Actor Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White on AMC’s "Breaking Bad," said: "There are nearly 45,000 suicides every year in the US. Shocking. I was saddened to hear of the deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. RIP. It illustrates that success is not immune to depression. We all need to be more aware of our friends who are suffering."

Pop star and actress Mandy Moore, tweeted: "This is utterly heartbreaking. Thank you for opening our eyes to parts of the world both cherished and unknown. What a legacy. Sending peace and love to his family. If you or someone you love needs help, please reach out or call 1-800-273-TALK."

Scientist and author Neil deGrasse Tyson called Bourdain "A friend of Food & Culture. A friend to us all."

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tweeted: "Anthony Bourdain's suicide a sobering reminder of how fragile life is and that we never know what's going on inside of another. Suicide is rarely a person acting, but rather being acted upon by the disease of clinical depression. We are all vulnerable. So very sad."

Terry McMillan, best-selling author of "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," said on Twitter "I really loved watching and listening to Anthony Bourdain. He was smart and sexy and I envied him being able to travel the world to eat. I wish people who are struggling inside could bring themselves to tell someone they are full of anguish or pain. Hope is reachable."

CNN anchor Jake Tapper, a colleague of Bourdain’s at the cable news network, tweeted:

"This is so awful. Anthony Bourdain, 61, has died. He took his own life. He was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series. His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning."

Elijah Wood, star of the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" movies, said: "His wisdom, his insight, his humor, his compassion, his staunch resistance to the inauthentic and support of all that resonates from the heart, and his passion for life that he shared with the us....Its difficult to process a world without Anthony Bourdain."

Veteran newsman Roland S. Martin said: "Stunning. Anthony Bourdain has died of a suicide. Man, folks can talk all day about success and money, but we NEVER know what others are dealing with on the inside."

Acclaimed novelist and short story writer Joyce Carol Oates, said: "Totally unprepared for the loss of Anthony Bourdain. Just--catastrophic. Unreal. One of the nicest people I've ever met -- & so genuinely a celebrant of communities & their foods -- which had, for Anthony, a spiritual value."

Actress Emmy Rossum of TV’s "Shameless," said, "Heartbroken over Anthony Bourdain. He was a kind person. This world doesn’t make sense today."

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, a colleague of Bourdain, said: I don’t want to overwhelm but the tragedies of #Bourdain and #KateSpade are shining a light on #suicide - a plague that we too often ignore. Putting up a number is not enough. Watch this and you can make a difference. I have seen the results first hand."

Arianna Huffington, author and co-founder of The Huffington Post, said: "Horribly sad news about Anthony Bourdain. And coming on the heels of Kate Spade, it’s worth highlighting that how this kind of news is reported really matters. And deepest sympathies to Bourdain’s loved ones and colleagues…"

MSNBC personality Joy Reid said: "Oh no... Sometimes, what seems like a perfect life from the outside — and what an amazing, adventurous life he lived and shared with a lucky world —can be hell for the person living it. May God rest his soul and bring peace to his family."

Actor Cary Elwes, of  "The Princess Bride" fame, said: "Devastated to learn we have lost one of the greats: Anthony Bourdain. Through his show he taught us more about the history, politics and flavors of so many cultures with his remarkable intelligence, wit and humanity. So so sad. Our sincere condolences to his family."

Actress Mia Farrow said on Twitter: "Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts. It even breaks your heart. But that’s okay; the journey changes you, it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind."

Thora Birch, star of "Ghost World" and "Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story," said on Twitter: "Just woke up and the news is especially gut wrenching today. Will be missing @Bourdain for a LONG time. I’m truly shocked and incredibly saddened."

Actress and model Selma Blair, of "Cruel Intentions" and "Heathers," tweeted: "Grief. May Anthony Bourdain find comfort in the ever after. Just grief. Speechless."

Musician-actor John Lurie, co-founder of The Lounge Lizards and star of "Stranger Than Paradise," said: "Anthony Bourdain walked into my home without a hint of ego. I loved him in seconds. A truly decent man. We needed him."

Nigella Lawson, TV personality, chef and and author of "How to Be a Domestic Goddess," tweeted: "Heartbroken to hear about Tony Bourdain’s death. Unbearable for his family and girlfriend. Am going off twitter for a while."

Bestselling author Gary Shteyngart said, "I took Bourdain out to Brighton Beach for Season 3 of No Reservations. He was gracious, brilliant and charmed every surly Russian in sight. Everyone struggles. Each life comes with a long catalogue of pain."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said: "My thoughts are with the loved ones of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. Depression doesn't discriminate. If you or someone you know is in need of help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255."

Alyssa Milano, star of "Charmed" and "Who’s the Boss," said: "Mental health can impact anyone. It does not discriminate. If you are struggling, you are not alone. It’s ok to be fucked up. It’s ok to ask for help. It’s going to be ok. Rest in Light, @Bourdain. Thanks for taking us on all your adventures."

Supermodel Padma Lakshmi, author of the cookbook "Easy Exotic," said: "I just woke up to the horrible news about my friend @Bourdain. In shock and devastated. One of the most fun and wittiest men I knew. Tony you will be missed. RIP."

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice said: "I met people who were kind, who were generous, who looked after each other. A lot of people are facing tremendous challenges, but are meeting those challenges with real determination and pride. I keep using the word 'enchanted.' I was enchanted."

Rock legend Iggy Pop tweeted: "I’m in shock having just heard that Anthony Bourdain has passed away. I loved the guy, and he was a light of kindness and good vibes in my life."

Actor Norman Reedus of "The Walking Dead," said on Twitter: "Anthony Bourdain. Damn. He was a huge inspiration for me for RIDE I’m such a fan of him. Such bad news. 100% missed."

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey said: "Incredibly sad about NJ native Anthony Bourdain’s suicide. He introduced us to global cultures, even bravely going to Azerbaijan despite being blacklisted. No matter your race, gender or class, if you feel hopeless, know that things do get better. Please call 1-800-273-8255."

Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Twitter: "The losses of Anthony Bourdain & Kate Spade are leading many people to reflect. We never truly know what is happening in another’s life. Take time to listen & talk with those you love. Small acts of kindness can make all the difference. If you are struggling, call 1-800-273-8255."

Actor Adam Baldwin of "Full Metal Jacket" and "Firefly,"  said: "R.I.P. Anthony Bourdain. Fearless against the world and other men with whom he disagreed. Inner demons proved too terrible."

Eric Braeden, who played Victor Newman on the soap opera "The Young and the Restless," said: "Anthony BOURDAIN IS DEAD! Used to watch his show! One of the best on TV! Sad he’s gone!"

Lea Michelle, star of "Glee" and "Scream Queens," said: "Another heartbreaking loss.. You are and will always be one of my idols Anthony Bourdain. Watching your show always brought me such happiness. Thoughts and prayers are with your family now."
