ABC News Crew Threatened With Beheading in Egypt

By    |   Thursday, 03 February 2011 04:09 PM EST

An ABC news producer and his crew were threatened with beheading Thursday after they were carjacked by a group of angry men on a road leading to Cairo’s airport, ABC News reports.

Producer Brian Hartman, cameraman Akram Abi-hanna and two other employees were surrounded by the men as they tried to cover the chaotic government uprising in Egypt, the latest attack on foreign reporters.

According to ABC, “it was only through the appeal of Abi-hanna, who is Lebanese and a veteran ABC cameraman, that they were saved from being killed or severely beaten.”

"We thought we were goners," Hartman said. "We absolutely thought we were doomed."

ABC also said that veteran news anchor Christiane Amanpour and her team were also surrounded and questioned by a threatening crowd as they were heading to the presidential palace to interview Hosni Mubarak and Vice President Omar Suleiman.

During that interview, Mubarak told Amanpour: "I am fed up. After 62 years in public service, I have had enough. I want to go. If I resign today, there will be chaos."
