Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions sent out a tweet Wednesday declaring he is a diehard supporter of President Donald Trump's agenda a day after the president endorsed his opponent Tommy Tuberville in the Republican primary runoff for the Senate seat in Alabama.
"I'm one of the architects of the Trump agenda – I've always supported it and always will," Sessions wrote. "Nothing the president can do will deter me from supporting this agenda, because my principles, just like my faith, are fundamental to who I am and immovable. We are Alabama. Nobody tells us how to vote or what to do."
Trump's endorsement of Tuberville provides the former Auburn University football coach with a big boost before the March 31 primary runoff, Politico reported. Tuberville narrowly beat Sessions in the Republican primary last week but did not receive the 50% needed to avoid a runoff.
The winner of the primary runoff will face Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., in the November election.
Trump has long criticized Sessions for recusing himself from the Justice Department's Russia probe.
Sessions is trying to return to the Senate seat he held for two decades before resigning in order to become Trump's first attorney general.
In a Cygnal poll released earlier this week before Trump's endorsement, 52% of Republican voters in Alabama favor Tuberville, while 40% back Sessions.
