PRETORIA, South Africa — First lady Michelle Obama opened her weeklong visit to Africa with a courtesy call on her South African counterpart.
Mrs. Obama met for about a half-hour Tuesday with Nompumelelo Ntuli-Zuma at President Jacob Zuma's official residence in the capital of Pretoria.
Ntuli-Zuma is one of the president's three wives. Zuma was out of the country.
The White House said in a brief statement after the meeting that the two women talked about Mrs. Obama's trip and her schedule in South Africa.
Mrs. Obama also planned a meeting Tuesday with Graca Machel, wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
