Casino/hotel mogul Sheldon Adelson continued his support for the super PAC backing Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich in February, giving another $5.5 million, according to fundraising reports released Tuesday. Without the $15.5 million that Adelson and his family have given to Winning Our Future, Gingrich may well have been forced to end his campaign by now.
The $5.5 million contribution from Adelson and his wife, Miriam, made up almost all of the $5.73 million Winning Our Future raised in February,
Politico reports. The super PAC also received $100,000 from Dallas billionaire Harold Simmons – on top of the $500,000 he already had contributed.
As a result, Winning Our Future was able to spend $5.75 million on behalf of Gingrich last month, even though he didn’t win any primaries or caucuses during that period, Politico reports. Most of the money went to ads and other communications. The super PAC had $2.28 million in cash reserves as of Feb. 29, slightly less than what it held Jan. 31.
Winning Our Future may soon be in financial trouble, though, according to Politico. Several reports in the past week have speculated that Adelson has written his last check because of Gingrich’s faltering performance.
