Democratic Party leaders should "absolutely" remove Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from the House Foreign Affairs Committee because of her repeated remarks that have been construed as anti-Semitic, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., told Newsmax TV.
Kinzinger was on Tuesday's "Newsmax Now" and was asked to comment on Omar's tweets that have made headlines during her first two months in Washington.
"Oh, absolutely. She shouldn't have been on the committee in the first place. Her ideas were well-known. She has a right to say what she wants as a member of Congress and as an American, but to put her on the Foreign Affairs Committee, where we deal with issues of war and peace, where everything we say in there makes headline news in other countries, the Democrats need to pull her off the committee," Kinzinger said.
"And I think what that shows to me is how far left this party has gone. This is not your father's Democratic Party anymore, that they'd put somebody like her on the committee and stand by her being on there."
Omar, a Somali-American Muslim, has ruffled feathers on both sides of the aisle with several remarks she's made that were critical of Israel and America's relationship with the Middle Eastern nation. Her latest comments came via a Sunday tweet in which she insisted she should not be expected to "have allegiance" to another country because of her job.
"Our democracy is built on debate, Congresswoman! I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee. The people of the 5th elected me to serve their interest. I am sure we agree on that!" Omar wrote.
