Jordan's King Abdullah to Visit White House This Month

Monday, 13 April 2009 08:12 AM EDT

AMMAN – Jordan's King Abdullah II will hold talks at the White House with US President Barack Obama on April 21 on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the palace said on Sunday.

"The summit will focus on efforts to reach a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and realise comprehensive Middle East peace," it said in a statement.

"The king will convey the united Arab position (on the peace process)," the palace added.

During the trip, King Abdullah will also meet with US officials as well as leaders of the Arab, Muslim and Jewish communities to discuss Middle East peace efforts, it said.

The announcement comes a day after a meeting between the king and several Arab foreign ministers who held talks in Amman to voice support for peace based on a two-state solution.

The concept of a two-state solution, which would see a viable Palestinian state existing alongside a secure Israel, is central to Obama's Middle East policy.

But it is unpopular in hawkish new Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
