Shape-shifting is a time honored -- if not particularly reputable -- aspect of politics. But in the face of America’s rising populist sentiments, several Democrats are doing their best this election cycle to masquerade as heartland conservatives. It’s a trend especially evident in red states.

Kyle Kondik, the managing editor of Sabato's "Crystal Ball" political-analysis site, notes that centrist Democrats used to be more conservative than the most liberal Republicans. And there were always several Republicans more liberal than the blue-dog Democrats.
