Boy Scout “leadership” has been busy diluting the brand since 2013 in a desperate attempt to please the gods of cultural Marxism. Or as Russell Patten, an Eagle Scout himself, wrote in The Resurgent, “I suspect the Almighty Dollar now motivates [the Boy Scouts of America] more than the Almighty.”
Peak membership for the Scouts came in the 1970’s when “close to five million” boys participated, reports The New York Times. That date is significant because at about the same time the culture started to go to hell, the Scouts’ membership began a long decline.
Today Scout membership is down by more than half, to approximately 2.3 million members. None of the membership boosting and brand diluting initiatives to reverse the trend has worked.
First BSA redefined “morally straight” — a rule that had been part of scouting since its founding in 1910 — so that homosexual teens could join. Later homosexual adults were allowed to become Scout leaders. Continuing down the same path, the organization then allowed young adults who refused to accept reality-based evidence regarding their sex to join the Scouts. This meant girls who said they were boys could join the BSA, but boys who thought they were girls could not.
As Patten observed, “the BSA’s moral foundation has been rapidly and steadily eroding into dust. We all knew that it was only a matter of time before the BSA compromised itself into oblivion. That day has now arrived.”
The Boy Scouts of America is now accepting girls. I predict this will be expensive. The name “Boy Scouts” is now obviously too exclusionary and must be changed. There will be expensive new logos designed, focus group testing of the new name and changing and reprinting all the corporate letterhead.
And that’s just at the home office. Cub Scouts normally meet in the den mother’s home, but Scout troops need a larger facility. A not insignificant number now meet in churches. I predict this will change. When the Boy Scouts was for boys, letting a troop meet for free in the church made sense. Church youth groups are co-educational, so the Scouts didn’t compete.
Now churches will not only be harboring an organization that competes with the churches’ own youth groups, the church will be hosting a group that has abandoned the moral foundation that made it attractive to religious organizations in the first place.
I don’t think what the BSA gains in meeting rooms in Unitarian Churches will be enough to overcome the loses in free spaces among the Baptists.
Meanwhile parents who were looking for an organization that trained young men how to behave and mature while surrounded by other like-minded boys may found a new organization that resembles the American Heritage Girls.
