The pressure is on big-time this week for Hillary Clinton and all of her political, media, and special interest cohorts.
As the Democratic National Committee readies itself to lower its opening gavel at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, WikiLeaks, the controversial organization that routinely publishes tidbits of previously undisclosed information, is priming the anti-establishment pump.
The convention is set to take place July 25-28 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
Interestingly, while party officials, public speakers, and event planners were working overtime, WikiLeaks was living up to its name. Just last Friday the group let 20,000 emails dribble out. The digital communications purportedly had DNC origins.
The emails seem to indicate that in its electoral primary process the DNC favored Clinton over opponent Bernie Sanders to ultimately become its 2016 presidential nominee. The content of messages suggest that Clinton supporters in the DNC infiltrated Sanders campaign.
Additionally, a portion of the email contents contains a message from a DNC official who was apparently seeking to create a negative narrative about the Vermont senator’s campaign, referring to it as “a mess.” Another DNC official seems to suggest that Sanders’s religious convictions might be able to be used against him in the South. And yet another message sheds light on a potential effort to intimidate and improperly influence a major arm of the media.
Evidently, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz was miffed because of some criticism she had received in May 2016 from MSNBC host and Sanders backer Mika Brzezinski.
Wasserman Schultz sought an apology and held an an off the record meeting with MSNBC’s president. During the segment in question, Brzezinski was commenting on Wasserman Schultz’s slanted treatment of Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary.
“This [the primary process] has been very poorly handled from the start. It has been unfair, and they haven’t taken him [Sanders] seriously, and it starts, quite frankly, with the person that we just heard speaking,” Brzezinski said, referring to Wasserman Schultz.
“She should step down,” Brzezinski concluded.
Brzezinski's comments turned out to be prophetic in a very real way. Under strenuous pressure to resign as DNC chair, Wasserman Schultz just announced that she will give up the job after the convention concludes.
Since the Clinton campaign was the beneficiary of alleged DNC favoritism, critics are going to rightly question whether Hillary was personally involved in this second email scandal go-round.
A number of Wasserman Schultz’s detractors were in the far-left camp of the party, and some were Sanders's supporters and even Democratic Party insiders.
CNN political commentator David Axelrod, who ran Barack Obama's presidential campaigns, had recently called for Wasserman Schultz’s resignation.
“I would ask her to step aside. I would ask her to step aside because she's a distraction in a week that is Hillary Clinton's week,” Axelrod told CNN's Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”
The DNC chair is also officially out as the individual who will be presiding over the convention, which was the original plan.
The DNC Rules Committee recently named Ohio Rep. Marcia Fudge as the chair’s heir apparent.
People who fervently supported Sanders throughout the primary campaign process remain jaded about the “rigged system,” which GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump frequently touts.
A case in point is Rosario Dawson, who is a disgruntled Sanders supporter that plans to make her opinion known.
“Oh, yeah, I am definitely going to the DNC, and I'll definitely be protesting outside of the DNC,” the actress told New York magazine.
Dawson has been arrested twice while protesting, once in 2004 and more recently in April 2016. In her own words, the reason for her dissatisfaction with the party infrastructure is “the collusion between the media and the Hillary Clinton campaign” and “the terrible debate structure.”
The actress also aired the following grievance, which is shared by a sizable number of Sanders’ supporters: “We want to get rid of superdelegates.”
The Democratic National Convention itself has released a speaker schedule that suggests there is going to be an ample amount of derision and division.
Sanders will address the convention on Monday and first lady Michelle Obama.is slated to follow.
In an effort to appeal to the Hispanic vote, the evening's speaker line-up includes illegal immigrant Astrid Silva, an activist for the group United We Dream, which seeks various forms of amnesty.
On Tuesday, former President Bill Clinton will reportedly open the DNC show. Hillary’s husband will be followed by speakers who are a part of an organization called Mothers of the Movement, a group that is comprised of African-American mothers who have lost children in high-profile deaths.
The mothers of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland are expected to appear.
