Hollywood is still stunned over President Barack Obama’s resounding loss to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney at the first presidential debate.
“Everyone is in shock,” a longtime Hollywood Democratic activist told The Hollywood Reporter. “No one can understand what happened.”
There is deep concern within celebrity circles about the debate, and the adverse effects that Obama’s poor performance could ultimately have on his re-election effort.
A number of Obama supporters have revealed that the president is now being offered Hollywood-style advice on how to most effectively comport oneself while appearing on a televised split screen.
“Everyone with a connection to the president is reaching out to him,” a veteran Democrat told the trade paper. “At the end of the day, the best coach he has is himself.”
The Obama campaign is moving quickly in the debate aftermath to restore morale in the entertainment industry, while it is simultaneously using any and all opportunities to extract additional cash from its well-heeled donors.
Despite the GOP fundraising advantage that has existed for most of 2012, the Obama campaign logged its best cash-generating month of the year this past September.
Campaign staffers are accustomed to turning to the Left Coast in their efforts to keep pace in the all-important money race, so it came as no surprise when Obama hopped aboard Air Force One and headed to California for a three-day celebrity reassurance and fundraising tour.
While in the Golden State, the president tapped the reliable bundlers and donors of the entertainment world to ensure that the barrage of television attack ads in swing states such as Ohio and Florida could continue uninterrupted.
Included on Obama’s scheduled Sunday agenda was an evening concert featuring a star-studded lineup and a pricey fundraising dinner. The concert took place at the Nokia Theater, an entertainment industry favorite that in the past has hosted numerous award shows, including the American Music Awards, the Primetime Emmy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and the ESPY Awards.
Concert performers that made the Obama-hailing roster included Katy Perry, Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, and Jon Bon Jovi.
The Obama campaign’s faithful celebrity bundler, actor George Clooney, was on hand to introduce Wonder.
After the music stopped, the president scurried next door to WP24, a trendy bistro owned by Wolfgang Puck, where several million dollars flowed into Obama’s campaign coffers from the sold out $25,000-per-plate banquet.
While still out on the Left Coast, the president also held a private meeting in Beverly Hills at the home of mogul and top bundler Jeffrey Katzenberg. Obama got together with a small group of elite donors to comfort, encourage, and thank them for writing the big checks.
The Hollywood community was reportedly so distressed about the Denver presidential debate that the Obama campaign had to call upon former President Bill Clinton, who happened to be out in Los Angeles fundraising for his own foundation, to make an appearance and do a reprise of his Democratic National Convention speech.
Monday finds Obama continuing in his efforts to raise even more money, this time in Northern California at a pair of San Francisco events.
On tap is a concert by multiple Grammy-winning singer John Legend. Also slated is a fundraising dinner hosted by celebrity chef Alice Waters, one of the most visible supporters of the organic food movement and the individual who inspired first lady Michelle Obama’s White House organic garden. Waters has catered dinners at the White House for the Obamas.
