Brisk Walking Delays Death, Study Finds

Saturday, 17 December 2011 08:48 PM EST

Outpacing death may be as simple as walking 3 miles per hour or faster, a new study suggests.

Australian researchers say they have calculated the average walking speed of the Grim Reaper and found he moves at about 2 miles per hour. The findings were published in the British Medical Journal.

They followed over 1,700 senior men for five years, taking note of the normal walking speeds of those who died and those who didn’t. Over the course of the study, 266 of the men died – and were found to have a slower walking pace than those still alive.

“As none of the men in the study with walking speeds of [3 miles per hour] or greater had contact with Death, this would seem to be the Grim Reaper’s most likely maximum speed,” the authors wrote.

Researchers hope their results spur more seniors to speed up their walking pace.

“People need to walk faster,” said Dr. Anne Cappola, a gerontologist and professor of medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “If they’re doing it to outrun death, that works just fine.”
