Vegetarian Diet: What You Should Know About this Healthy Diet

Thursday, 09 January 2014 01:44 AM EST

Vegetarian diets are in these days. More and more people are converting to following vegan recipes all over the world. The reason for switching over to vegan diet may be many, like ethical, religious, social, etc.

A vegetarian diet is a healthy diet. Abstaining from meat is always a healthy decision as meat consumption is linked with chances of contamination, heart diseases, and cancer. There are a lot of health benefits associated with a vegetarian diet. It is linked with lowering the chances of cancer, diabetes, obesity, and heart problems. Before one switches to vegetarian recipes, one should clearly understand what vegan, vegetarian, and lacto-ovo vegetarian diets mean.

Vegetarians are people who consume plant-based products. Vegans are people who use only vegetable-origin products in their recipes, never eat eggs or meat, and abstain from milk and milk recipes. They consider all animal product recipes as unhealthy choices to consume. Some vegan followers opine that eating raw vegan diet is a more healthy option. Lacto-ovo vegetarians take mostly vegetarian recipes, but they do eat eggs and dairy products. Lacto-pollo-pesco vegetarians are people like lacto-ovo vegetarians who take fish and poultry meat as well.

One cannot switch to vegan or vegetarian diet all of a sudden. It is advised to move over to vegan or vegetarian diet in a phased manner. Often, when people decide to become vegans or vegetarians, they start following the diet right away. In the beginning, one can introduce vegan recipes every week, along with nonvegan diet and gradually convert to a fully vegan diet in a few months. This is a healthy option as the body starts accepting the change. Vegetarian recipes can also be healthy and yummy. Vegetarian recipes are good for reducing weight as they contain more fiber and less saturated fat.

Some studies have raised a doubt if vegetarian diets are healthy as they lack in vitamin B12, vitamin D, and  omega-3 fatty acids. But, a balanced and properly planned vegetarian diet can be as healthy as a nonvegetarian diet. Children on a vegan diet may be deficient in vitamin B, calcium, and vitamin D; however, this deficiency can be met by using appropriate supplements. Generally vegan recipes include grains, pulses, seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. To meet the nutritional needs, if you choose a well-planned vegetarian or vegan diet, you have made a healthy and wise decision. It is commonly observed that people who are living on vegetarian diets are healthy and are more active than those who follow nonvegetarian diet.
