Saturday, 01 February 2014 09:13 PM EST

In Type 2 diabetes, either there is insufficient insulin production by the pancreas, affecting sugar metabolism, or the cells of the body develop insulin resistance and do not absorb sugars that accumulate in the blood and increase sugar levels. This condition, called hyperglycemia, may lead to Type 2 diabetes.

Signs and Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Often, the first signs and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes go unnoticed because of their correlation to stress and weight gain. When the blood sugar level increases, following signs and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes can be noticed.
  • Frequent infections of the skin, bladder, kidneys, liver, etc.
  • Slow healing of wounds and cure of infections
  • Increased fatigue
  • Increased hunger and thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Numbness in feet and hands
  • Decreased perception of pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Erectile dysfunction
One or more of these signs and symptoms may be noticed in Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes Treatments

The signs and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, if left untreated, can become severe. Absence of treatment of increased blood sugar levels can be life threatening. Type 2 diabetes has its treatments in allopathy, ayurveda and natural medicines.
  1. Insulin injections are given in Type 2 diabetes to increase insulin levels required for proper sugar metabolism.
  2. Type 2 diabetes treatments include medicines to reduce blood sugar levels:
  • Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors (acarbose)
  • Biguanides (Metformin)
  • Injectable medicines (exenatide, mitiglinide, pramlintide, sitagliptin, saxagliptin)
  • Meglitinides (repaglinide, nateglinide)
  • Sulfonylureas (glimepiride, glyburide, tolazamide)
  • Thiazolidinediones (rosiglitazone, pioglitazone).
  1. Diet regulation: A low sugar diet is very important because in Type 2 diabetes, the body converts fats and other substances to sugars. High sugar foods should be replaced with high fiber diet.
  2. Weight control: Since obesity is a sign of Type 2 diabetes as well as a risk factor, maintaining proper weight is crucial.
  3. Regular exercise: Regular exercise complements Type 2 diabetes treatments by increasing blood flow, decreasing blood pressure and reducing the effect of stress and tension.
  4. Taking care of feet: Since they experience loss of nerve functions and vessel damage in the foot that lead to numbness, Type 2 diabetes patients should take care of the feet.
