Spring Allergies: Top 4 Ways to Prevent Them

Monday, 10 March 2014 12:18 AM EDT

Do you feel run down in spring? Spring allergies can be very bothersome and make you feel dull and bored in spring, when it is that time of the year when you would like to enjoy and experience the beauty of nature.

The major reason behind widespread spring allergies is the release of allergens, such as pollen from trees in the neighborhood.  Your chances of catching spring allergies increase with increase in the release of pollen and allergens into the atmosphere.

Allergens and pollen spread wide and far with wind. There are some simple remedies and easy-to-use medicines that can help you battle spring allergies effectively.
  • Watch the time you go out. Pollen and allergens are active in the air early in the morning and on dry, hot, and windy days. Hence, one of the quick remedies to spring allergies would be to ensure that you step out of the house during the evenings when it is not windy and is probably cooler. Going out after a rain is a good idea.
  • Protecting with masks. Allergens and pollen are present all around you, in the garden, roads, etc. Wearing masks while going outdoors or while you work in your yard is one of the easy remedies to prevent spring allergies. Though medicines also come in handy to prevent spring allergies, wearing respiratory masks with a HEPA filter is often sufficient to prevent spring allergies from happening.
  • Keep your house clean. You might often not notice, but pollen and allergens that cause spring allergies are often present indoors, too. Doormats, carpets, shoes, and curtains are places you need to check for pollen and allergens. Remember to vacuum clean your house regularly to remove pollen and allergens that have travelled into the house. Tap your shoes outside your house to shrug off any pollen that is sticking to them. These are easy remedies that would help you stay away from spring allergies. In addition, keep the windows closed so that pollen and allergens traveling in the wind do not enter your house. Keeping your house clean and void of pollen and allergens to the best extent possible is one of the easiest and most effective remedies to keep spring allergies at bay.
  • Take antihistamines. For certain people, staying away from pollen and allergens is not enough to prevent spring allergies. For them, medicines called antihistamines are usually prescribed to reduce the susceptibility to spring allergies and increase resistance. Some of the commonly available medicines that you could take to prevent spring allergies include Allegra, Benedryl, Dimetane, Claritin, Alavert, Tavist, Chlor-Trimeton, and Zyrtec. Note that taking medicines for spring allergies can cause drowsiness and dry mouth.
