Schizophrenia is a psychological condition characterized by illusions, hallucinations and distorted thinking. In schizophrenia, the sufferers withdraw themselves from the society and are removed from reality. They don’t consider themselves sick who need treatment to alleviate their suffering. The treatment of schizophrenia usually continues longer. Mostly, the person needs lifelong treatment. The treatment of schizophrenia includes antipsychotic medications. These medications are called neuroleptics — the drugs that tranquillize by blocking the nerve sensations. Treatment of schizophrenia with antipsychotic drugs causes initial side effects that become less severe later on. Although these medications are helpful in controlling the symptoms, the treatment with antipsychotic drugs causes many side effects.
One of the common side effects of these antipsychotic drugs is drowsiness. There is a need to alter the medications during acute phase of schizophrenia when the drug dosages are increased. In maintenance phase treatment, the medication dosage is reduced and continued for longer period.
Dizziness and restlessness are among other side effects of schizophrenia medications. These days, atypical antipsychotic medications are used in the treatment of schizophrenia.
The common side effects linked to these medications are muscular rigidity and tremors. Some people experience painful spasms and rigidity as side effects during treatment with these drugs.
Clozapine, one of the very effective and commonly used drugs, is linked to peculiar side effects like decrease in white blood cells.
Risperidone, a very common drug to treat schizophrenia and autism, is linked to side effects like nausea, fever, jerks, fatigue and dizziness.
Hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, obesity and hyperglycemia appear as side effects with almost all antipsychotic drugs used in the treatment of schizophrenia. Some people complain of blurred vision with these drugs.
However, it is advised to continue medications even if side effects persist and to consult your doctor to prevent schizophrenia relapse. Your doctor may reduce the dose of these drugs or substitute them.
Long-term uses of antipsychotic drugs are linked to tardive dyskinesia characterized by uncontrollable movements.
It is better to inform your doctor about any medication you are taking because antipsychotic drugs may interact with them and cause side effects. Along with the treatment, family support and counseling are equally important.
