Rugby Natural Iron Supplement Recalled

By    |   Friday, 01 March 2013 04:23 PM EST

The makers of a natural iron supplement have issued a recall of the product because it may contain an antihistamine that can cause serious side effects in some people.

Advance Pharmaceutical Inc. has recalled one lot of Rugby Natural Iron Supplement Ferrous Sulfate (325 mg) because a pharmacist found a bottle contained a different drug, meclizine HCl. The lot number of the recalled Rugby supplement is 12G468 and the expiration date is July 2014. The product is packaged in 100-count bottles.

Meclizine is an antihistamine that treats motion sickness. Too much if can lead to serious side effects, including drowsiness, confusion, low blood pressure, coma, reduced breathing rate, and even life-threatening complications.

Taking meclizine in the doses recommended for iron supplements may cause serious side effects in people who drink alcohol or take other sedatives, as well as those with a pre-existing central nervous system disorder, kidney or liver problems, the elderly, nursing infants of lactating mothers, and newborns of mothers given the drug immediately before childbirth.

The manufacturers recommend that anyone who purchased the product not use it.
For more information, contact Advance Pharmaceutical at 631-981-4600, ext. 300, Monday through Friday.
