People who have a hard time sleeping because of heartburn and other issues caused by reflux disease benefit significantly from the class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors – such as Prilosec – a new study has found.
Not only do the drugs improve sleep, they also boost the daytime quality of life for sufferers of gastroesophageal reflux disease, according to a new analysis of studies published in the journal Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.
The findings are based on researchers’ review of clinical trials since 1989, when Prilosec (omeprazole) became available. The analysis found the drugs significantly reduced or eliminated sleep-related problems associated with GERD symptoms.
"The existing evidence supports the use of PPI medications as a treatment to improve esophageal reflux disease symptoms and associated quality-of-life sleep disturbance-related outcomes," they concluded.
