Doctors have unraveled the bizarre medical mystery of a healthy 20-year-old woman who died suddenly after taking a fall while running on a beach with friends, according to a report on the
LiveScience Website.
Friends reported the young woman was able to stand after falling, but then quickly collapsed again, and began gasping for breath and her lips turned blue. Within 30 seconds she became unresponsive and, despite rapid response from paramedics who performed CPR, she died within a half-hour.
According to a report on the case in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine, doctors later determined the impact of the woman's body on the sand when she fell was enough to prompt a rare heart condition called commotio cordis.
The condition throws the heart into a dangerous arrhythmic pattern, after which it stops altogether.
