Symptoms and Treatments of Premenstrual Syndrome

Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is when a woman undergoes physical, psychological, mood and emotional disturbances after she has started her ovulation until she starts her periods. During this period, she also suffers from body cramps.

The common emotional symptoms of premenstrual syndrome include:
  • Crying
  • Depression
  • Oversensitivity
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings, that vary between anger and sadness
The physical symptoms of premenstrual syndrome or PMS include:
  • Fatigue
  • Tenderness in breasts
  • Bloating
  • Food cravings
Premenstrual syndrome or PMS also gives women cramps. These cramps are experienced in the stomach and pelvic region. More than half of women suffers from these cramps. Usually it has been noticed that these cramps reduce with age. There are a few ways by which these cramps can be taken care of. There are certain anti-inflammatory drugs that are nonsteroidal in nature and can be used to cure premenstrual syndrome or PMS cramps.

 
Treatment for Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS

There are various treatment options that women can opt for to get rid of the PMS symptoms before they get their periods.
  • Exercise
  • Emotional support from friends and family
  • Reduction in the intake of alcohol
  • Reduction in the intake of refined sugar
  • Avoiding salt before getting periods
  • Avoiding smoking
These are the general treatments that women can go for. There is no strong scientific basis to prove why these treatments are effective to cure the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome or PMS. Medications can also be used as treatments for premenstrual syndrome or PMS. They include antidepressants, painkillers, etc.
 
Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is something that occurs in the case of most women. They undergo cramps and mood swings, and there are many other symptoms that show how the body of a woman gets affected before she gets her periods. There are treatments for the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome or PMS before a woman gets her periods.
