Tick bite is a common problem faced by dogs and humans. Tick bites can cause Lyme disease, tularemia, babesiosis, and Colorado tick fever. Lyme disease is a common disease caused by tick bite. It is caused by the bacterium Borelia burgdorferi. People who frequently have contact with grass and pets get Lyme disease which is caused by tick bites. In the U.S., Lyme disease is considered to be the commonest of all diseases caused by tick bites.
The most common symptom of the tick bite disease is the rash. The rash appears as a small red bump at the site of tick bite. The person may feel itchy at the tick bite area and, after a few weeks, this rash starts growing. The rash which is medically known as erythema migrans is a confirmatory sign of the Lyme disease. An experienced doctor can make the diagnosis simply by looking at the peculiar rash.
The other signs and symptoms of Lyme disease include fever and body ache. Chills and severe fatigue are other signs and symptoms experienced by some. Over time, in the absence of proper treatment, the rash may spread to other body parts, and other signs and symptoms begin to appear. Acute joint pain, especially at knee joints is an important symptom of Lyme disease. Many people with Lyme disease experience neurological signs and symptoms. These signs and symptoms appear due to the involvement of the brain and other parts. In some people, the eyes become red and there can be a discharge of pus. Inflammation of the liver is another uncommon sign of Lyme disease.
Dogs also get infected with ticks and acquire Lyme disease. In dogs, the symptoms appear differently than in humans. The rash is not the common symptom in dogs. They generally get joint pain and fever months after the tick bite. This makes the dog lame. In most of the cases, lameness is the only symptom of a tick bite. Some dogs usually get enlarged lymph nodes as the only sign while some other dogs may develop heart and kidney problems. It is very difficult to ascertain the other signs and symptoms in the dogs as these they vary so much. Many dogs show no signs and symptoms initially. Dogs are recommended doxycycline antibiotics for a month till they show no sign of Lyme disease.
This tick bite disease is completely curable if treatment is started in the initial stages without ignoring the early signs and symptoms.
