Low T and Sex Drive: There Is a Definite Link

Friday, 07 March 2014 01:59 AM EST

Testosterone is the male hormone responsible for secondary sexual characteristics like a deep voice, male pattern hair distribution, penile erection, and sex drive. Testosterone is also linked to the muscle tone and the bone mass of men.
Low testosterone levels may be a part of the normal aging process. At times, other factors such as obesity, infections and injury to testes, and pathology in pituitary gland may have adverse effects and cause low testosterone (low T) in the bloodstream. Specific tests are available to check low testosterone levels in the blood. Low testosterone levels may be caused by thyroid problems, depression, alcohol, and side effects of some medicines.

Normal lower limit of testosterone in men is 300 nanograms per deciliter of blood; anything lower than this is labeled low T. One of the primary effects of low T is low sex drive in men. After 30, men often experience symptoms like fatigue and low sex drive. Low sex drive caused by low T can affect men’s personal life.
Low sex drive is medically referred to as male menopause or andropause. Sex drive is actually a subjective feeling; what you consider a low sex drive can be normal for others. There are many causes of low sex drive in men. Sex drive is also influenced by sleep quality, stress levels, and environment.
Low testosterone is associated with many harmful health effects like fatigue, depression, insomnia, muscular weakness. Men suffering from atherosclerosis, diabetes, and heart diseases, or taking medicines for high blood pressure may complain of low sex drive; these symptoms may be linked to low T levels. Lately, the awareness of the effects of low testosterone and its management through supplements has been increased, and this can bring low T levels back to normal.

Low testosterone supplements may be required if one has symptoms of low testosterone levels. Loss of libido, low energy, and erectile dysfunction or poor erection may also be the effects of low testosterone levels. In the case of poor semen and low sperm count, a low testosterone level is suspected. Many supplements are available to supplement the low testosterone levels. Though these supplements reduce the side effects of low testosterone, they have their own side effects. It is wise to consult a doctor before taking these supplements to reduce effects of low T.
