Laryngitis: Common Causes and Treatments

Friday, 14 March 2014 12:35 AM EDT

Laryngitis is a condition in which the larynx gets inflamed and swollen. The larynx is the voice box inside the throat. Vocal chords get swollen, which makes the voice sound hoarse. Laryngitis is of two types, acute laryngitis and chronic laryngitis, depending upon the severity. Whispering can cause strain on the patient’s vocal chords.

Most of the acute throat problems are caused by viral infection that causes swelling of the vocal chords. Such viral infection can cause serious complications in children like swelling of the throat.

Causes of Laryngitis

Bacteria or virus is responsible for the causes of laryngitis. Viral infection is one the common forms of this condition. Causes of viral infection may include other health conditions like cold, bronchitis, or flu. Viral infection causes infection and swelling of the larynx. Excessive consumption of alcohol can be one of the causes of hoarseness.

Other causes are heavy smoking or acid reflux. Bacterial infection, viral infection, and vocal strains are the causes of acute laryngitis. Acute laryngitis gets cured easily after the causes are treated. Cancer and paralysis of vocal chords are some of other causes of chronic laryngitis. Some of the common causes are listed here:
  • Bronchitis
  • Injury
  • Allergy
  • Pneumonia
  • Bacterial infection
  • GERD
  • Irritants and chemicals
Treatments of Laryngitis
