Grape Seeds Fight Obesity-Related Kidney Disease

By    |   Monday, 04 March 2013 12:19 PM EST

Powerful antioxidants contained in grape seed and skin extract (GSSE) have been shown to help treat and even prevent obesity-induced kidney damage.

According to a new study published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, Tunisian scientists have found GSSE is a potent weapon against kidney disease caused by high fat diets and overweight.

Although the conclusions are based on laboratory studies of rats fed a high-fat diet that induced a low-grade kidney damage, researchers said the findings hold great promise for the treatment of human kidney patients.

"In our research, obesity-induced leaky kidney and proteinuria are shown to be prevented by GSSE, which suggests the use of GSSE as a preventive nutriceutical for high-risk patients," said Kamel Charradi, a researcher with the Laboratory of Bioactive Substance at the Center of Biotechnology of Borj-Cedria in Tunisia.

Charradi’s team has previously published research showing GSSE may also help combat obesity, heart disease, neurological problems, and kidney cancer.

For the new study, Tunisian researchers determined increased deposits of triglycerides and saturated fatty acids increased kidney damage, but that animals treated with GSSE experienced a positive “reversal” of their condition.

They concluded polyphenols, including resveratrol, are likely the components in GSSE responsible for the positive effects.
