How Can You Identify GMO Foods?

By    |   Wednesday, 10 June 2015 10:00 AM EDT

The easiest way to identify GMO foods is to look at the packaging, since the U.S. and Canadian governments don't allow companies to label products "100 percent/Certified Organic" if they contain genetically modified foods.

GMOs are organisms whose genetic makeups have been chemically altered using genetic engineering, and increasing evidence has linked GMOs to health problems and environmental issues, according to the NON-GMO Project.

A debate regarding whether genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, should be labelled remains as controversial as the GMOs themselves, despite what seems to be significant support of the public's right to know.

Unless a product contains the label "organic" or "verified non-GMO," it likely contains genetically modified ingredients. There are eight GM food crops that typically use GMOs: corn, soybeans, canola, cottonseed, sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, and some zucchini and yellow squash, according to the Non-GMO Shopping Guide.com.

If sugar is listed as an ingredient on a product manufactured in North America, it's likely a mix of sugar from sugar cane and GM sugar beets, the web site said. The Non-GMO Shopping Guide also provides a list of more than 150 brands that are currently enrolled in the Non-GMO Project.

Natural Society goes further, by cautioning consumers to "Beware of 'Invisible GM Ingredients,' since some less-familiar source ingredients come from GMOs, such as whey, glutamate, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and lactic acid.

As a rule, Natural Society recommends avoiding artificial sweeteners and maintains that one should "assume all non-organic corn, soy, cottonseed, and canola ingredients are GMO."

Daily Finance also listed canned soups, baby formula, and carbonated soft drinks as foods that must be given up to avoid eating GMOs.
