Where to Shop If You're Avoiding GMO Foods

By    |   Monday, 15 June 2015 10:39 AM EDT

Buying foods that contain zero genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, is at times challenging and pricey, but can be worth the extra time and expense. It's important to seek out labels on foods such as "Certified Organic" and "USDA Organic" to ensure a GMO-free experience.

In addition, large grocery chains such as Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Safeway, Walmart, and Giant Foods, among others, have developed their own store-labelled "organic" brands, which can offer a less-expensive way to eat organic foods.

It's important to note that products affixed with the USDA Organic symbol won't intentionally contain GMOs, but it's not an iron-clad guarantee. In some cases, a third-party plant may have been employed, which could taint the product.

Trader Joe's claims all of their branded products use only GMO free ingredients, but they don't reveal the name of their third party lab. Meanwhile, Whole Foods' "365 Everyday Value" maintains that "all ingredients derived from plants are sourced to avoid GMOs, and hundreds of those products are verified by the Non-GMO Project."

Safeway also follows USDA Organic guidelines regarding its "O Organic" line, but also doesn't divulge sources of ingredients from the labs that provide certification.

As a rule, it's good practice to selecting products with a "USDA Organic," "Non-GMO Project" or GMO Guard label. It's also a possible to download one of a number of smartphone apps that can assist while shopping.

Other helpful ways of avoiding GMOs include buying only GMO-Free/family-owned Organic Brands, shop only at organic grocery stores, and search for local farms and organic restaurants.
