Role of First Aid Treatment and Home Remedies in Burn Healing

Monday, 03 February 2014 12:46 AM EST

A burn is a condition where integrity of the skin is lost due to heat. Skin burns may be caused by hot objects, fire, steam, electricity, strong alkali, or acids. Burns are classified based on their intensity. First- and second-degree burns are easy to manage while third- and fourth-degree burns require intensive treatment under the supervision of experts. Immediate relief can be provided for burns through first aid treatment. First aid treatments and home remedies play a crucial role in healing skin burns. First aid treatment provided soon after being affected by burns can reduce the inflammation and prevent complications in the skin. For minor burns, only first aid treatment and some herbal home remedies are enough. For deeper skin burns, apart from taking first aid treatment, one needs to consult an expert for proper healing. For treatment of skin burns caused due to acids, alkali, or electrical injury, it is better to contact an expert for effective treatment.

Normally, minor skin burns heal on their own and do not cause complications. The first step that should be taken for skin burns is to remove the source of heat, and prevent the skin from further exposure to heat. As a first aid treatment, run cool water over the burn to reduce inflammation. Removing the debris on the skin at the site of the burn is the best first aid, as it can prevent infection thus making the burn heal faster. Healing usually occurs in superficial burns if they are protected from infections through first aid. A burn starts itching when it starts to heal.

Aloe vera is one of the best home remedies for burn treatment. Linseed oil is another excellent home remedy that helps in the healing of burns. Chamomile ointment is one of the common home remedies that helps in reducing pain and inflammation. Honey is another safe and widely used home remedy for healing superficial burns. Honey has both antiseptic and soothing properties that help the burn to heal. Banana peel is also an excellent home remedy for helping burn from healing faster.

Many other home remedies like using oils, vinegar, and ice for skin burns are not recommended by doctors for the fear of damage to the skin thus preventing it from healing. These home remedies have an adverse effect on the skin as they delay the healing process and invite infections.

After administering first aid, it is always prudent to take the opinion of an expert for third- and fourth-degree burns and for electrical, chemical, and radiation injuries.
